I just run the second outputs of my Ayre preamp to my Velodyne's, but they do their own EQ for each one.
From a picture of the back of the SMS-1, it seems like you only need one unit. Just run the stereo outputs from the preamp to the R/L inputs. Then, take the EQ outputs over to each of the R/L subs.
