Splitting the sonotube in half lengthwise creates a diffusive shape that would reflects sound in a beneficial 180 degree pattern, away from the walls and out into the room.An unsplit sonotube placed against a wall would create spaces that would trap reflections rather than diffuse them outward, as a certain am.unt of sound would be "trapped" or directed back against the flat surface of the wall, rather than outward into the room.
I think it m.ght be better to split the tubes lengthwise to create half-dom. shapes before installing them. If the tubes were absorbers instead of diffusors they m.ght be best left fully rounded, because those gaps between the back of the tube and the wall m.ght help trap reflections so that they m.ght be absorbed better. But I think that diffusors would be best in the half-round configuration, the better to radiate sound outwardly.
