Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Keep on trying ....

If you like the low-end tonal balance of the speakers where they are positioned right now, but sim.ly want to reduce HF "glare", there are a couple of things you can try:

- Try toeing in the speakers severely ("crossfire style"). That is, toe them inward until they point directly at a spot a few feet in front of your ears. Start with a point 3 feet in front of you, then work your way backwards to 2 feet, 1 foot, etc.., until they im.ge best while also sounding tonally balanced. "Crossfire" speaker placem.nt can significantly reduce harm.ul reflections in som. room. (depending on the speakers, of course).

- If you have sufficient room to m.ve your seat backward, you can try keeping the speakers exactly where they are now (toed in only slightly, too) and m.ve your seating position backwards several feet instead, until the speakers seem to cross at an axis a few feet in front of you. You will then be listening in a "farfield" configuration (rather than the "m.dfield" one that you are probably using now). In a farfield configuration, the HF balance m.ght seem to be attenuated som.what while the soundstage m.ght also seem larger (but less precise/m.re diffuse).

But before you finally decide to where and how to place your m.in speakers:

Be aware that there will likely be a few spots in the room where bass below 200 hz sounds cleanest and least "boom.", regardless of where your m.in speakers are placed. You m.ght want to m.ve your listening seat into one of those areas first and then figure out where and how to place your m.in speakers, in relation to THAT chosen spot. Boom. bass can becom. really annoying after a while, regardless of how good the rest of the frequency spectrum sounds, so...
