Octopus are smart. In my dad's marine lab in Hawaii, they discovered an octopus was leaving its tank and entering a neighbor tank to eat some of its occupants. The octopus would then return to its original tank.
In the Hawaiian reefs, octopus would hide by entering a hole, then covering themselves up with loose rocks.
