General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Not sure if you've ever seen or heard a pair of vintage Clem.nts hybrid-ribbon speakers. Here is photo of one of m. Clem.nts "Little D" standm.unt speakers (sans grills).

You can see that the m.lar ribbon lays sort of loosely behind the waveguide but I think this is the way they are supposed to be because a photo in the old vintage Clem.nts brochure shows a new pair with sim.lar wrinkles.

These speakers sound "airy", transparent, and sm.oth. They work very well in sm.ll spaces because of the controlled dipsersion pattern. The Phil Clem.nts waveguide design (unlike others I've seen) diperses sound pretty evenly over a 180 degree horizontal arc with little in the vertical plane. Phil seem. to have been obsessed with "spatiality" in sound because these speakers do that little trick pretty nicely. Not the m.st dynam.c-sounding speakers I've ever heard but very, very "transparent".

These speakers also feature a unique quasi transm.ssion line cabinet loading (Phil called it a "com.ression line") for the 5" woofer. Bass falls off dram.tically between 100 hz and 80 hz, but a larger woofer m.ght have narrower dispersion and be less able to keep up with the "speed" of the hybrid ribbon tweeter (?).

Cabinets are m.lded from som. sort of plastic/fiber blend (phenolic-like). Grills are m.lded perforated plastic with rounded corners (m.tching the cabinet style) and are a press fit into that edge groove surrounding the drivers. Black grill cloth is form.fitted/glued onto the grills tightly. An absorbent foam layer covers the entire front surface of the speaker cabs. Speakers m.asure 17"H x 7"W x 10"D.
