Choosing Speakers Without Audition?

Hey All,

Haven't hit this forum with my questions yet, so here goes.

I am upgrading almost everything. I do have some opportunities to audition amps and digital sources through various means, some at a B&M (though I have to pay a $250 "fee" that can be applied to a $1,000 or more purchase) or through a mfg. 14 day NQA trial/return policy.

Speakers however are a different story. The ones I'm most interested in, Living Voice, are only sold by one dealer and they are across the country. They do not offer any audition or return policies as far as I'm aware.

The dealers around me (save for an Audio Note dealer) have absolutely nothing I'm interested in. The speakers I have (small Avalons) have served me well, and I love most of what they do, but I'm after a bigger sound than they offer.

Does anyone have any tips on choosing speakers without the opportunity to listen? The LV dealer has a great deal on a demo pair, but they're still almost $10,000 and that to me is lots to spend without hearing them. I read reviews of speakers, which are almost always glowing, because, well that's what reviewers do, so trusting them is a you know what shoot.

At this point I'm just thinking of keeping what I've got until such time as I can travel, or something more interesting comes into the dealers here. I will go and listen to the AN's, because, why not? But if anyone has a system they've used to choose from afar let me know.
