RE: what a co-inky dinky

Much as I love ESL 57s the OP needs to be careful when matching them with that McIntosh.

The amp is rated at 100w/channel into 8ohms and 160 into 4. If the voltage into the ESLs exceeds 33 V peak to peak you risk burning holes in the membrane. The McIntosh's spec suggest it can develop output voltages in excess of that limit. The speaker was designed to be used with a 20 watt/channel amp.

ESL 57s in original condition have no protection against that potential damage. Some reconditioning shops do add a protection circuit so the OP would need to find out if one is fitted.

One other problem with 57s is the lowish maximum sound level produced and the fact that they need to be well forward from the front wall being dipoles. So not suitable for very small rooms nor very large ones or for someone with a taste for realistic level metal bands.

Incidentally listening to my friend's 57s last Sunday being driven by his 300B push/pull mono amps fitted with the new WE replica 300Bs from Cossor. Talk about fabulous!!
