I did try extreme toe-in with my horns. It had interesting effects on the depth of the soundstage but I ended up back on the "normal" toe-in.
I don't believe there is any general answer to your question as it is room and system dependent.
Soundstaging being in essence an illusion, what sounds best to YOUR ears in YOUR rooms IS what's best IMHO.
