Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

That describes our college life in the 90s

Back then, we did not have large or full-sized stereo equipment. So we placed dinky speakers on shelving or bookcases, or even on top of dressers.

In the mid-90s, my brother lived in an apartment, right off of the UC Davis campus. One of his housemates had a Cambridge Soundworks sub/sat combo. Thus, they were able to place the little satellites on shelving built-in to the wall, while the woofer box lay on the floor.

The next school year, my brother took the NHT SuperZero, which worked well, up on a bookcase. Here, the thin, lightweight, and flexible Kimber 4TC functioned nicely. And they thought that the subwoofer sounded tighter, when textbooks were placed on top, LOL!

Because that little NHT SuperZero had no bass, the flip side was that it performed well on shelving. That said, you don't need anyone to tell you that you should experiment with various materials between the shelf and Totem Sky. Versus, for example, the Model 1 Signature, the Sky has a tighter, quicker upper bass. That makes the Sky a little better, when used on a shelf.

Between stand and Sky, we use Blu-Tak. But if the Sky were on a shelf, we would have to try out various cone-and-cup combinations. These would isolate the speaker from the shelf.

One of my old friends now has a son, who goes to UCLA. Student Housing can place three students, into rooms which used to hold two. So large external speakers are out, and students use the ones built into their computer, or simply use headphones. Since students edit videos, audio quality is important. So there is demand for physically small, yet clear, detailed, and focused speakers (built-in or otherwise).

Within Totem, their Element Ember is a better speaker than the Sky. But the Ember's punchy midbass, while most excellent, makes it problematic, if the speaker is placed on a shelf.

I have not heard the latest models, but if we were going the sub/sat route, I liked Totem's original Kin mini and sub. In white, they visually disappear, which, in this application, is nice.
