Apogee Studio Grand ribbon/cone hybrid

At the March 1993 Stereophile Show, San Francisco Stereo Plus had multiple rooms. The flagship room had stacks of Krell electronics, driving an Apogee Studio Grand. The latter had a huge subwoofer module as a base. On top of that was the fin-shaped ribbon panel.

That room was busy. When music played, I could only get so close to the seats. Still, even when standing along the side, I thought the sound remained relatively clear.

SF Stereo+ had a smaller room, with B&W Matrix loudspeakers. There, the staff kindly played my Dream Theater Images And Words CD. I still have the actual CD, photographed above. One attendee thought that Kenny G was playing the soriano sax, on "Another Day." But no, the sax player was Spyro Gyra's Jay Beckenstein.

Other audiophiles tell me that they *think* the May Audio room used Roksan and QED electronics.

At the end of 1993, Ultimate Sound moved out of the "dungeon" basement, and into a 2nd floor unit on Grant Street. Ultimate Sound then became a Totem Acoustic dealer. Yup, that same Dream Theater CD was used to audition various products, including the Totem Model One, at Ultimate Sound.
