High passing the main speakers can make them cleaner and improve the mid bass and lower mids. At least it did in my system, different than yours) and in my case with a passive crossover unlike the active ones in subs. You must use a sub with a high pass. A few like REL don't have a high pass. And you have to hope the sub's crossovers produce a nice transfer function(roll off of mains and hope it's already good for subs) or else the crossover region will sound not so good. Ideally that means the transfer function should be custom for every set up. But try it. It very well might work well. It often does even with the generic crossovers in subs.
