In the late-80s, we were told that the late Robin Williams lived in the Sea Cliff. When he was home, he was known to visit San Francisco's comedy clubs. Not that anyone was a stalker, but each time we went through the Sea Cliff (I went to nearby Presidio Middle School), we hoped to run into Robin Williams.
My friends and I didn't discover Joe Satriani's Not Of This Earth until the Spring 1987 semester, 4 or 5 months after it had come out. We had it on cassette, which we brought to a store called Whole Earth Access. Not that anyone could afford one, but we lusted after Sony's Pro Walkmen. Anyway, we loved Satriani's "The Snake."
My family is from Hawaii, so SF's waters are COLD! In 1982, while we attended Presidio, the dragon on Asia's album cover made us think that sea monsters would rise from Baker Beach, around the Golden Gate Bridge. Alas, this was the Cold War, so more likely to appear were Russian subs.
Also in '82, the video for the Scorpions' "No One Like You" was filmed on Alcatraz. Certain hardy swimmers would go, without wetsuits, from Aquatic Park to Alcatraz. If regular citizens could make that swim, surely the federal prisoners escaping from Alcatraz could make it to Marin.
But you're right; perhaps because China Beach is a cove, its waters are slightly less cold than, say Ocean Beach's.
