Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Have you considered a kit?

Parts Express has 4 subwoofer kits based on a 10" Dayton driver. Two are partial kits with just the driver, front baffle, and bracing for under $200. You build the rest of the sealed enclosure. There's a slightly larger kit that includes the top, bottom, side, and back panels. All three are suitable for making a passive sub. They also sell a complete active sub kit with the same driver but with two passive radiators and the plate amp for $600. Madisound also sells some active subwoofer "kits" that are really just driver + plate amp but include plans for a suitable enclosure. They use expensive drivers though.

It would be more fun to use the software to research and pick your driver and design a cabinet for it. But more work obviously.
