RE: Audio Reference 126 DC

So, the 126DC speakers arrived on Sunday. Carrying those beasts up to the first floor through a skinny staircase wasn't easy, but we managed!

At first, connected to the big MF M6i integrated amp, it sounded... bad. Dark and muddy in the midrange, and a treble with limited definition and extension. The seller, who stayed for a drink, couldn't recognize his ex-speakers. He said "that amp sucks" and, resolute to not stay on such a disappointing impression, we took my friends car, drove to my place, and I hauled the tiny NuForce Icon amp I use in my bedroom system.

WOW.

The tiny 200$ class D amp COMPLETELY outperformed the 4000$ 200w/channel class AB British monster. Outperformed is a small word: it RIDICULED it. Imaging, definition, depth, micro dynamics, macro dynamics, speed, even loud passages sounded less restrained and clumsy than the MF amp! Only (has to be expected) low bass was more powerful with the big amp, but not by much, and it certainly is well enough with the Icon.

My friend was so disgusted he begged me to let him keep the NuForce for a few days... he really doesn't want to connect his MF amp anymore.

We are now looking for a new amp for him... I showed him Schiit Audio products, a Freya + and Aegir couple would seem like an ideal option, of course not being able to listen to those before buying is a bit of a deal breaker...
