Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Where are all the old speakers,,,,

That is a great question.

I think that there are a number of answers:

1. Lots of old speakers are still in use. Yes even old Sansuis etc. from the 1970s. Many non-enthusiasts bought into the audio boom of those years and never changed or upgraded. They were done with it then. Maybe they added a CD player in the 1980 or 90s. That's it. Only used at Christmas nowadays.

2. I don't know bout the USA, but do you have town or other municipal dumps? Because for most non-audiophiles as soon as anything broke or just looked old fashioned and they had redecorated the room that's where it went (at least here in the UK). Maybe there was a period when it was stored in the garage but that got cleared out at some stage*.For most ordinary people fixing it was either unavailable or too expensive. Replaced by a smart speaker these days. Remember most "civilians" will not place any residual value upon old tech stuff as they don't appreciate that it may have any. They don't even know about our hobby.

3. Some is still in circulation . See ebay or Craig's list. For a lot of these items, however, their ultimate fate will eventually be as 2. above.

Out of the millions of speaker cabinets made over the past 50 years across the world how many are going to be fettled with new drive units? a few thousand at best.

* I have a friend who has a Linn LP12 and a pair of 11 or 15 ohm original Rogers LS35as in his garage ( one non-functional tweeter). The latter bought from his uncle who worked at the BBC and got some kind of discount.I have saved them from the dump twice so far but I know that sooner or later I will ask and the answer will be " my brother and I cleared out the garage last month".

So , sadly, the shortest answer to your question is: landfill.
