Yes indeed, unfortunately those materials were not available to the BBC back then.
Actually , and at a slight tangent, this is making me think of some new loudspeaker designs that are using two layers of wood (or wood composite) glued together with an advanced adhesive that absorbs vibrations. I think some of the OEM designs from Fink-Audio Consulting are using this.
