The Gershman's are very good loudspeakers and I can't think of a single pair of new $1,000 floorstanders or standmounts that would beat them. I can't think of a pair that would come close to be honest. I would take your speakers over any of the speakers brands you have mentioned up to double or triple the $1k budget and maybe quite a bit more. What may have more sparkle in a show room for a 1/2 hour audition could wind up being a serious irritation over longer sessions. Gershman Acoustics is one of the most underrated lines of speakers out there. The grass may look greener on the other side - until you realize it is astro-turf.
I would consider changing the amps and looking at class A amplifiers like The PureAudio One integrated amp that I recently reviewed - or something that is pure class A - perhaps Accuphase although they are much more expensive in the USA than here in Asia. And the source is critical - no speaker or amp can fix a poor source.
Lastly it is not a bad idea to make sure your contacts are cleaned - on the speaker and amp ends and that you have cleaned the connectors. Something simple and free that could help a decade+ old speaker.
