I would give the nod to either the PSB or ELAC. Especially considering your concern for overbearing brightness. I heard the ELAC entry level speaks at an audio show a few years ago and they were impressive given their cost. The Epos suggestion below is good as well and it is nice that they are front ported though at 88dB you'll need pretty decent power to get the most out of them. Another suggestion would be the Martin Logan Motion 15 at a sale price that tops your budget. I have heard those demoed several times and liked them. You might too given your requirements for sound profile.
