RE: What did you drive them with?

While it is usually safe (and often a very good idea) to buy vintage speakers, it should always be remembered that an "old receiver" in original conditions has capacitors that are 40 to 50 years old often (for the classic receivers of the "golden era").
We are in 2020... a 1970's receiver/ amplifier that was still "OKayish" in 2000 is now a ticking time bomb.
Fun, yes, absolutely! But cheap? once that receiver goes "poof", it starts being quite expensive; even more expensive when it sends DC to the cherished vintage woofers it is driving.

Been there, done that, more than once.

If your friend has tight budget constraints, he'd better buy something that is less than 15 years old. It won't look the same, but there will be less headache.
