It's true I wrote that about gain structure and all; I should update it as in the meantime I have a different preamp and different active crossover AND in-line attenuation on the CD input. I am now able to listen at much softer levels without any issue. But I find - it seems - that the "softer levels" on my system are less soft than on a pair of LS3/5A.. all is relative :-)
