The production Pipedreams EQ was a simple passive network in front of the sub amplifier.
It is true that below resonance in a closed box a driver resists movement powerfully and just wants to stop so ringing, which happens above resonance, basically doesn't exist.
I thought closed boxes roll at 12 dB/octave not 6 dB which makes the power equalization even harder.
By the way The Scaena speakers used the same type of system which was not surprising since the Scaena speakers were designed by George Bischoff of Pipedreams. And I don't know how old this concept was but McIntosh used this technique in the 70s. But I suspect the concept had to wait for big solid state amps(1000 watts or more was nice) since prodigious power is needed to equalize the woofers. The original Scaena woofers had a box resonance of 180 Hz and were equalized down to at least 16 Hz. I saw HP's and Bischoff's eyes bulging while playing the Lost World CD track at high level
