RE: First system

Powered speakers can be a wonderful option and sound great - a good idea for a small budget - just realize that if one of them goes "poof" you are out of music completely. You are also very limited in upgrades (basically, you need to sell them and start over).

I'm a bit of an audio eccentric and would suggest something completely different (as a possible option): you mentioned Klipsch, and considering your favorite music styles I would say it's not a bad idea to go that direction. How about checking what second hand Klipsch (and other speaker brands) you may find locally? On a very tight budget, buying second hand speakers can be a great idea. I would go so far as suggesting to maximize your speaker budget - keep around 100$ for a small class D amp, just to have you covered, and re-budget for a better amp whenever you can. Then, later, if needed you can buy a subwoofer - but depending on your first purchase, a sub might not be needed. It will take you longer to have your system fully complete, but proceeding step by step you will end up with something considerably better IMHO.
