Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

polarity of both speakers correct?

If not, that'll do it.
Make sure L & R channels are the same . Check all the way from source to speaker.
Don't assume the "+" and "-" terminals on both loudpeakers are correct; check 'em.

If you have, or know someone with a Galaxy Audio "Cricket" polarity tester -- this is a great chance to use it! :)

Alternatively there's an old (IIRC) Stereophile test recording with "in phase" and "out of phase" [ sic ] demos with white (or pink) noise that should make it pretty obvious if you have a polarity issue. Send me a PM if you cannot dig one up (and you want one); I might be able to help. :)

It's not really a "phase" (two signals that are out of phase cannot be 'harmonized' by swapping + and -; but two signals of opposite polarity can), but nearly everyone calls it that! :-P

all the best,
mrh
