If you design a loudspeaker from scratch and use the drivers in their most linear range then out of band irregularities should be pretty much inaudible with an analogue active crossover if you use a 24dB slope, wouldn't they? (it's more a question than an affirmation, and it's most likely not an universal solution, but with the right drivers it can work really good IMHO; possibly the benefits of having multiple amps and direct connection to drivers outweighs possible small irregularities persisting? I don't know, but it seems to me many analogue crossovers are still being used with a happy outcome - I'm one of the users, although I keep the mid-to-tweeter leg of the existing passive crossover and only use active between midrange and bass).
