The real BBC LS5/8 was always an active speaker. Early ones used one modified Quad 405 amp per speaker with built in crossover. One channel drove the woofer designed by the BBC. The other channel which was modified to reduce power drove the Audax tweeter. Later speakers used special amps built by Chord.
I had a pair of the Quad versions on loan for a month and wrote a review for Stereophile in the early 80s. It was an impressive speaker for its day.
