IT's not easy to sub woofer an LS3/5a. Other similar speakers are easier. The LS3/5a has a big hump in the mid bass and then dies below that. The hump is to make the speaker sound like it has more bass than it does. And the hump is poorly damped. It rings. If you back up a sub to the roll off you still have the hump and the ringing. And if you run the LS3/5a full range without a high pass filter you still have the relatively poor power handling and limited loudness of the speaker without the subwoofer.
The best way would be to design a custom electronic high pass/low pass that equalizes the hump and then applies the crossover. Then at least the response would be flat and the power handling and loudness improved. The mid bass overhang would still be there but it would be reduced. The problem, of course, is this is a significant project for an experienced speaker designer.
