It's not mandatory to orientate inductors in an orthogonal fashion. IF there's enough distance between the inductors interaction is minimal anyways.
Inductors are not funny things. They're easily understandable and characterized. Any other opinion is voodoo.
That said, the way to improve any crossover containing inductors, capacitors, and resistors, is to remove it. :)
