Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

pics aren't clear, but here's a guess

This is probably a 2nd order crossover, and the caps are probably paralleled to obtain the proper value to achieve the tweeter xover point.

First of all, this is not an upgrade. Dayton caps are cheap and not very good, and Dayton caps were used in both configurations. It is a value change, not an upgrade.

If the caps are indeed parallel, the total difference is 11.5uF original increased to 14uF new. That's a decent jump which lowers the xover freq a bit to put more output through the tweeter. That tweeter has a pretty high resonance, and you want to stay an octave or more away from that. Lowering the xover could provide a bit more sparkle to the sound, but also cause more distortion, uneven freq response, or reduce power handling, or all of those.

Tekton seems like a pretty straightforward outfit. I would ask them what the proper value is and use that.

I would also buy better quality caps of the proper value and throw that Dayton junk away. Tekton built these speakers to meet a price point, and they used the minimum quality caps to get there. The drivers are very good but expensive, so they had to cut cost somewhere. A lot of speaker manufacturers do the same thing, so better xover caps will almost always make some improvement. Finding good ones is easy, but finding good cheap ones is not. You will hear some improvement with the Clarity Caps already mentioned. I suggest you also consider Mundorf Supreme or Audyn Plus or Jantzen Superior Z.
