RE: why no wave guide in BBC monitors?

Wave guide is relatively new. The last real BBC speakers(designed by the BBC) came out in the 1980s(LS5/8 & LS5/9) except for the LS5/12 which was designed by a then depleted BBC development department. And the LS5/12 was probably the BBC speaker most poorly received.

Besides even today not everyone uses wave guides, some probably to save money, some because they prefer not to use them and I'm sure some who don't really understand them.

Funny thing the BBC did sort of use wave guides but on their cone drivers in some speakers. The BBC mounted their drivers behind the front panel and some speakers such as the LS5/5 and early LS5/8(a 2 way with 12" woofer and dome tweeter) closed the vertical woofer opening with a slot that reduced the width of the woofer opening to widen the driver's dispersion horizontally.
