The first time I heard the term beard was from David Wilson before the Puppy subs. David said the beard helped to reinforce the bass when the WATT was placed on the Wilson stand. Anything that helped the WATT bass was good balance wise. David designed the WATT with tight bas and since small boxes roll off early the result was a very lean balance. The BBC designed the LS3/5a with a mid bass bump to hide this balance affect.
The early BBC style speakers were done before bass design math was known and the result a bit over blown bass. A beard would have enhanced this affect, An open stand minimized the affect which could hide the really nice lower mids on many BBC style speakers.
