RE: Looking to add a sub.....or two...need serious advice

To answer your questions:

The sub should be run from the preamp. Your amplifier has enough to do running the mains.

The mains should run full range. A decent sub will have enough flexibility built into it to allow suitable integration with the mains. Adding another high pass crossover will only complicate matters.

Not sure I understand this question. Either input channel on a subwoofer plate amp will work by itself. Most of them contain a blending circuit to combine two channel input into a single channel.

A single BETTER sub will be better than two lesser ones, especially if your room has limited options for placement. Placement of a sub has almost as much to do with the quality of the sound as the sub itself. Size is certainly a factor, and bigger is usually better, but a bigger driver or enclosure is not always the most important factor. A cheap driver, a flimsy enclosure, or the typically marginal amplifier and controls will impair performance. Spend enough to get (or make) a single superior sub.

DIY is a more effective way to achieve better quality for less money. There is nothing complex about a subwoofer enclosure, and plate amps these days are almost foolproof. Buy a kit or use an established design, buy a decent driver for a couple hundred bucks, and get a plate amp that includes DSP processing so you can really dial in low freq response.

Of course Vandersteen says their subs will perform best with their speakers. What kind of company wouldn't make that claim? But you can build a sub of equal or superior quality from a good kit, and use a better driver and amplifier. I've seen the amps in commercial subs, and many of them are junk.
