Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

you need to make some basic measurements. I use a Stereophile test disk and Radio Shack SPL meter to sweep from 30 to 200 hz. Even a free smartphone based SPL app would be useful.

What I've found doing measurements with my HT is that logic doesn't always work the way you think it will. A significant variable with choice of xover frequencies has to do with your room modes. I perform a number of trials using different combinations and record the results. I begin with the mains by themselves to get a baseline. Then I phase in adding the sub(s). The attached spreadsheet contains correction curves for the RS digital meter. Naturally, those can be adjusted or removed for use with other devices.
