I could have very well been in that picture! That's exactly what the traffic looked like for the first 140-miles of our 235-mile return trip. It was absolutely unbelievable -- bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go for the first 140-miles until we hit the Bluegrass Parkway for the last 95-miles home. There was hardly another car on the Bluegrass Parkway and it was smooth sailing for the final hour-and-a-half of an eleven hour trip.
However, the eclipse was awesome. I had never seen a total eclipse of the sun and it was definitely worth the awful trip home to attend such an awesome event. Furthermore, the Army base was not crowded at all. There were about 30 of us sitting on the lawn underneath a couple of large shade trees enjoying the social interaction. A couple of people brought telescopes and let everyone take a look. All the crickets started chirping when it began to get dark and they went silent during the two-and-a-half minutes of darkness. Then they started chirping again as the light began to return. The entire experience was very enjoyable until we hit the road for the trip home. But, we made it without incident, and I guess everyone else made it home, too.
Best regards,
John Elison
