Some solid state does sound lean, but other solid state definitely does not. I use a Pass Labs x-150 as a bass amp on my triamplified speakers and a pair of First Watt F-3 stereo amps for the mids and highs. I do not hear a bit of lean in the sound they provide. Previously I used a modified Moscode 600 hybrid amp for the bass and Cary Audio 2a3 SET monoblocks for the mids and highs. The change from tubes to solid state was a very good one and didn't introduce any leanness.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
