Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

It's not the amps

The original NS10Ms were *really* bright, and pretty much everyone taped tissue paper over the tweeters, which helped a little. (Kleenex? Toilet paper? One ply or two?) The later version, which is in a gazillion studios, is still bright. By being somewhat bright and very detailed in the mids and highs, it helps the engineer pick out what's going on in the mix or track, which a more musical speaker might mask.

Example: I recorded a cabaret act of three tenors singing mostly pop songs, with piano. We used a pair of U87s and a U67 for the vocals, and an x-y pair of KM84s for the piano, all into Neve 1064 mic pre's. All good. I brought the file home to mix on my Spica TC-50s, then brought the mix back in to listen on the Yammys. A number of things popped out that the Spicas glossed over, especially dynamics - one of the singers didn't have nearly as good technique as the other two. Fixing that made it better, and yes, it sounded better on the Spicas, though it wasn't obvious *why* it was better. The NS10M's are really good tools; not the most musical by any measure, but good tools for getting a track or mix right. Their smooth roll-off at the bottom end also helps experienced engineers reliably translate their sound into what listeners will hear at home.

There was a good article on them in Sound on Sound some years ago - see the link.

BTW, the amps for them must be super-clean sounding. Any hint of transistor grit or glare will hit you like a hammer.
