RE: Mid and High range level controls Pioneer CS 99

Nice vintage loudspeakers with a lush, full range presentation that should mate well with Harmon Kardon gear if memory serves.

A wise man once said to me " if your speakers don't come with tone controls you don't need 'em". I guess if you have them, then you must need them although I do not like 'extra stuff' in the audio chain.

When I come across loudspeakers that have these features I usually set the level of the tweeter first to balance the low frequency output of the woofer. It is very easy to over compensate for the lack of high-mid and overdue the tweeter level a bit but you can back it off later.
Now slowly increase the mids level until the sound in the room is sounding a little forward and less warm and lush. Back off slightly from here and then re-adjust the tweeter which is probably slightly over done.

You should be in or near the right ball park now but so much is dependent on speaker placement and room acoustics that you need to do this one loudspeaker at a time, compare the two separately left then right then left etc. with your balance control while both speakers are being fed the identical information. (mono switch on or feed amp/receiver L or R only in both channels: you may require a 'Y' type adapter if you cannot select L or R from the front panel)
It is a good idea to balance the perceived output at this time as well.
Using the balance control adjust until the lead vocal or instrument is place dead center in the sound-stage.

Running in stereo once more you should have a decent sound-stage and an overall well balanced sound.
Listening over a period of a few days with several kinds of music will tell you if further adjustments are required. Be patient as these things take time.

Cheers.
