While I agree, cabling in general is over-priced, there are a few manufacturers that do build using materials that represent a good 30% or more of the retail price. When you factor in their overhead: R&D, advertising/web-site costs, factory costs, personnel wages etc. etc.
many builders are not getting rich overnight.
I recently swapped out a $900. power cable for a $3000. model and am in awe at the positive change realized after only 25 hours. A few years ago I would not have believed a story like this but the proof as they say, is in the pudding.
As I am confident I could not build a power cord that performs as well as either of the power cords I mentioned; like just about everyone else I will have to pay dearly for peak sonic performance. On the other hand, cabling has a unlimited shelf life and as such is a long term investment.
