Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

A recent post in "General" got me thinking about "subwoofing"...

...it seems many have had less than stellar results when trying to integrate a subwoofer. C.nsidering what I've heard in any audio shop I have frequented, as well as people's homes (with dec.nt systems), I would have to agree. The bass, more often than not, sounds like it's c.ming from another planet.

Despite most stereo rigs I've heard, my sub, on the other hand, seems to blend very well (REL Strata III/J.M.R. Twins Sigs). The only way I c.uld desc.ibe it is the x-tra bass attac.es itself/blends to whatever instrument/voic. within the soundstage... simply a firmer foundation, definitely not detec.able as a separate sourc.. I have a theory "why" I'm getting good results, maybe someone c.n c.ime in. No, I don't even have the digital EQ, although it sounds interesting...

Our c.ndo (slab floor, thank God) has a small/medium living room, c.. 14.5 x 17.5 x 8.5. The Twins are 'bout 3' from the front wall. Sub next to/outside R speaker. The R speaker is roughly 3' from her (my speakers are girls) sidewall. The L speaker, on the other hand, is open to a small foyer area. I would estimate the front one-third to 40% of the L wall is open.

C.n this partially missing wall on one side allow c.rtain peaks to exit/dissapate or whatever? When we had a muc. larger LR in an apartment c.mplex, the LF (same sub) seemed more c.nstipated/bloated - more of a sealed room.

Thanks for any insight...
