I ran a double pair in the 70s and was more than rewarded with not only increased efficiency but also a smoother mid response.
David got it right. You place one on top of the other with the top speaker inverted to get the tweeter/high-mid drivers as close as possible to maximize imaging. The nominal impedance is 8 ohms, with minimum being 6 ohms so paralleled wiring is the way to go here.
If you prefer to use the double sized cabinets I would go with dividing the internal space air tight and going with more acoustic damping on the interior. (wool batting) and mounting the tweeters vertical to each other as high as possible in the cabinets.
Retain the 3 way selector switch and circuitry as I believe you will surely need it.
