Todd -
I currently have merlin vsm-mxs driven by ars sonum filarmonia - all bought from bobby. however, when i first bought the mxs, i used a dehavilland ultraverve pre with a belles 150a reference amp and i thought the sound was "darn near perfect".
so, why did i switch?
i actually did not want to.
the early versions of the power modules amps were "dc-coupled". while i dont really know what this means, i do know the following:
1. they are now ac-coupled as the other versions had issues....
2. my belles amp took a "massive power turd" and blew out a woofer on one of my merlins
as i had a blown amp and blown speaker, i spoke to bobby and i bought the filarmonia. (now about 3.5 years ago)
I also had a berning amp and was one of the first merlin/berning users as bobby recommended that to me in 2001 when i had vsm-ses. selling it was one of the dumbest audio moves i ever made.
but, if you find a belles 150 ref or 350 ref amp that is ac-coupled with the "soft start" switch, you will be VERY happy with the sound via ultraverve.
i love the fila as i have my system in my basement office at home and the room is small. (9'x15' with 8' ceilings) if my system was in a bigger room, i would get an amp with a little more "juice" and the belles would be tops on my list.
