Budget 5.1 surround system?

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

My parents are buying themselves a 42in LCD TV for Xmas, and i want to buy them a decent 5.1 surround speaker setup for them. Im not sure what direction to go in, they arent audiophiles at all but my dad does know the differance between good and bad sound. At first I was thinking an all-in-one system, but quickly found most of them are crap. So then I was thinking of going with seperates. I could just get a pair oof stereo speakers to start and add on the surround speakers as they can afford it? Any opinions which direction to go?
