Some audiophiles feel it's sheer stupidity to not listen to a speaker before buying. But what happens if your audition is terrible and you know the speaker should be better?I used Vandersteen 2Ci's for 6 years and one time walked into a demo room with a pair of my exact speakers. Nice dealer, all hooked up to fairly decent components and it sounded nothing like the satisfying sounds I was achieving at home. Maybe it was the speaker cables, or IC's or source impedance mismatch. Dunno...but I sure wouldn't have purchased the VAndy's after that demo. They sounded completely underwhelming.
My take is no manner what you hear in a showroom, a carefully setup system that is tweaked at home can achieve a much better representation of the speaker strenghts.
