The carpet pieces may be a good thing.I have hardwood floors and have tried the quarters under the spikes and also thick pieces of marble and much like you ended up with some nice thick "carpet samples" under the spikes.
About 2 1/2 feet in front of the speakers I've also placed a 2 1/2'x 8' "runner". Not long ago I moved it while the stereo was playing and noticed right away how the sound became irritating, unfocused and harsh. I was suprised at how much difference the rug makes. I suspect that this is one of the "first reflection" points.Don't know if you have any rugs in front of your speakers but I recommend it, especially with that hard tile and how reflective it is.
