I've had woofer distortion caused by bad I/C connections once and by a dirty amp jack another time, but in your case having the problem follow to the other channel pretty much rules that out.Very sorry to hear about this and in case you can't get it worked out in time I hope you can get past the disappointment and have a very Merry Christmas with your family & friends.
