If possible, try to audition the Audio Note ANJ/Spe. As the photo shows, mine are only 4ft apart (center-center). They are driven by an 8W 300B SET (follow link for photo). As any Audio Note enthusiast can tell you, mine are less than optimally placed but the room and usage dictates. Even so, they are the most realistic sounding speaker I've heard. Deep, tight bass; smooth mids & highs; dynamic; enchanting; blah, blah.
You should be able to get a used pair for <$3k, if any are available. Could you squeeze in a new pair for 3k, seeing you're in EU?
They sounded great with other amplifiers too, and readily show the amplifier's capability. I suspect the ANJ's would do very well with the DRD300B's. I'd like to build a Welborne one of these days.
