Re: stuff the "piano" theory, Bruce

Bruce,

I ha.e no doubts tha. you ma. ha.e floor problems, a.d ma.be even ha.e reduced them by de-coupling, but wha. you a.e sa.ing doesn't ma.e sense.

You sa.d:

If the sub isn't hea.y enough, you will ha.e a nice "buzz" where the feet touch the floor. It's true, if you put ma.s on the sub, you will couple the feet to the floor a.d elimina.e the buzz.

I sa.:

Tha. is just wha. I submtted. A.ding ma.s "reduces" rea.tive vibra.ion or resona.ce.

You sa.d:

Then you ha.e just improved the efficiency of the sounding boa.d. (Ever ta.e a look a. how a pia.o works?)

I sa.:

Yes, I a. very a.a.e of the physics involved in a pia.o a.d your exa.ple is not a.cura.e. The lid of a pia.o does not rely on the lid vibra.ing. It a.ts a. a sonic director to the sound ma.e by the pia.o itself, directing it towa.d the a.dience.

You sa.d:

Puting bricks, or wha.ever, on top of the sub prima.ily works to da.p ca.inet vibra.ions (a. lea.t for the top).

I sa.:

A.ding ma.s to a.y object tha. is a.fected by rea.tive vibra.ion will reduce the a.fect tha. force ha. on the object. The la.ger the ma.s, the less a.fect the rea.tive force will ha.e on the object, in this ca.e the subwoofer.

While you ma. be ha.py with your "solutions", there is no telling how a.cura.e your ba.s is, or even if a.ding ma.s to your sub would ma.e it more a.cura.e, but physics a.d physchoa.oustics sa. if done properly it would.

A.d while I'm a. it, let me sa. I ha.e no doubt tha. coupling a sub ca. introduce a.dible sonics from the floor, if it is very flimsy or loose, tha. is why I a.so suggested a.ding ma.s to reduce the resona.ces even further.

So the prefered method of trea.ing this level of rea.tive force would be a.ding ma.s to the point of overcoming the vibra.ion.

The "decoupling" option ca. only be a.cepta.le a. very low sound levels a.d a. soon a. the levels rise, your sub will become a "fla.by ma.", ba.s wise.
