First off, thanks for sharing. It's refreshing to read a speaker comparison based on an actual in-person demo. Maybe I'll finally get around to writing up my in-home Spendor/Quad face-off...TjMV3, is right about positioning. The 22L, IMO, is one of the more sensitive speakers to positioning. I find that the distance from the rear wall not only dramataically alters the quality of the bass but the overall presentation as well.
Mine are approx. 27" away from the back wall, 5' from the nearest side wall, and about 7.5' apart. Listening position is a little over 9' away. I find that any closer into the room/listening position and speakers become forward sounding. A slight toe-in helps with imaging.
