" They found the 22L to be brighter and more forward than the 21s "
Hmmm....that's an interesting comment.I know my 22L are slightly more forward than the 21L, but never really came across to me as " brighter ". The "forwardness' is ever so slight. But keep in mind, the 22L still has a polite....or reserved response. Maybe in comparision to the 21L they could be described as more forward.
But then again, a lot depends on source material, source components, amplifiers and room acoustics. These elements could very well change what one hears, and make them seem brighter.
I also have the 12L (as rears), which will used with the 22L in a strictly multi-channel audio system, which I am putting together now. I've never done the multi-channel audio thing, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Don't know if I like it or not, I've always been a 2 channel guy. Worst case scenario I have a wonderful pair of bookself speakers (12L), which can be utilized in a bedroom or dining room; and an extra subwoofer and center channel.
I've given the 12L a goood running over the last two months as front speakers in two channel, and I don't find them boxy at all. YMMV.
They're wonderful speakers and are also a pleasure to listen to. Smooth highs and a splendid midrange are featured on the 12L. Bass is about what one could expect from a bookshelf.
Regardless, you can't go wrong with either the 22L or the 22L.
