BB-Using Naim Naca5 cables and DIN interconnects throughout system - even with the BAM that has a DIN> RCA cable from the tape loop of my 282 pre.
I have a pair of Audience Au24 speaker cables coming Friday to test. I have only been listening since Monday night. Merlins are not yet fully set up. (Still experimenting with speaker position so the spikes are not yet on.)
I have only embarked upon this "test" because of two developments:
1. The new VSM-MXs and MMs are more "relaxed" than before....and....
2. The Naim gear (post 2002) is also fuller and warmer than in decades past.I believe that older VSM-Ms with Naim "Olive" gear would make a rather forward presentation. The new gear, especially with a 250 amp, works better with all (non British) speakers.
Initial listening has yielded promising results: from the absofrigginlutely amzaing to the promising. Thin recordings sound a wee "hot" so far. Full music just sings......
I have been enjoying a certain level of audio experimentation over the last few years (during certain slow months)and I have readily concluded that - for me - I need to build a system around the loudspeakers that I WANT TO live with for life. Aesthetics, performance, price, etc.....if I dial in the Merlins with Naim, then good for me. If not, I will keep my cdp (CDX2/XPS2) and get a Belles 150a Ref and Joule 150 pre.
Yes, I did indeed have a Berning/Capitole mk1/Cardas GR/Merlin set up. I loved it. However, I thought the Capitole was one of the most finicky pieces of gear I have ever had. The Berning was great but I FELT it was a little dry. Regardless, my wife and I moved back to Chicago in 2003 (from SF) and I sold the system at that time.
I have known my local (Naim) dealer here for 20+ years and he just WON my business with knowledge and great service. (Promusica.)
More later.....
