Rotel amps often measure a bit on the dark side - a bit of HF rolloff here and there. C.mpared to a Bryston, for eg., the Rotel will indeed sound more distant. During our A/B demo, my dealer liked the c.oser-stage presentation, I wasn't so sure. Don't get me wrong, the Bryston did c.rtain things better (at thric. the pric.).
You c.n do a searc. for "under $2000 speakers" for a million ideas. In the pric. range, I liked the Dynaudios, Revels, Vandies and the Ref 3A de C.pos. These all have a "meaty" presentation.
